Transitioning Later in Life
In Sissy, Jacob Tobia writes about the (destructive) Madlib narrative that mainstream media considers acceptable for trans people. It goes something like:
I always knew I was a _____ trapped in a _____ body.
Then the story goes reliably through gender dysphoria, social and medical transition, and finally happiness in a transformed body that corresponds to binary gender norms – the holy grail of “passing.”
Of course, that’s not the story for everybody (or every body).
- Not everybody wants to fit the binary.
- Not everybody wants medical transition.
- We didn’t all “always” know what we felt.
