Coming Out Later in Life

The coming-out narrative is an American creation, and it’s enough of a stereotype that you can shorthand it –

  • Nervous teen/young adult
  • Skeptical parents
  • Baffled/angry/supportive reaction
  • Tears of joy or heartbreak
  • New happy life!

You can see it in a movie montage, can’t you?

But what if:

  • you’re in your 40s? Your 50s? Your 60s?
  • you’ve lived a life of compulsive heterosexuality?
  • you have a different sex/gender spouse you genuinely love and care for?
  • you have growing or adult children?

We feel you, and we know what you’re going through. You’re not the first to come out late in life, and you definitely won’t be the last.
